WASHING TIPS
High Quality Activewear
Activewear is insanely trendy right now. In 2018 activewear sales reached over $80 billion and the industry is predicted to grow almost 20% by 2023. Thankfully, our leggings and joggers aren’t going anywhere. Well, except out with us everywhere we go. Because this is what we are all wearing, and because activewear fabrics can be a bit particular, you want to take good care of it. It becomes extremely important to maintain all those properties we love about our activewear, like 4-way stretch, sweat wicking, and fit These are the things that make your Zyia activewear your favorite. Not to mention you want them to look them as good as they did the day you bought them. Keep reading to know just how to care for your Zyia activewear.
Follow these tips below and you can be guaranteed to keep the high quality and function of all of your favorite pieces. and always make sure you don’t put activewear in the dryer!
Activewear is made to be durable and handle all our rough workouts. But all those repeated washes start to destroy the stretchability in the fabrics. Most of us don’t have time to hand wash, yuck, but you take some simple steps that will ensure your favorite pieces last.
SPORTS BRAS
First, remove pads from your sports bras and keep them out of the washer and dryer. I like to soak these separately to ensure they get clean and don’t get crazy twisted while going through the wash. Plus, they can get very stinky. Zyia has an amazing solution to that. The Norwex detergent is my favorite and  will even get out that nasty odor from teen boy socks! Many women are top half sweaters and those pads can just hold all that in. Next, try to wash them as quickly as you can after use so all that bacteria doesn’t stick around and transfer to all your other clothes. Finally, don’t ever put your sports bras in the dryer. Follow these steps and your bras will continue to support you for a very long time. (See what I did there? Support! Lol!)
WASH ACTIVEWEAR SEPARATELY
As you prepare to wash make sure your activewear pieces are separate from all your other laundry! There’s nothing worse than having colors bleed on to your activewear. You know that white tank you love? Don’t ruin it by washing with your jeans. Who wears those? Since many of Zyia’s fabrics are moisture wicking they can suck up the color from other pieces. Best to just save yourself the grief and wash your activewear all together. Don’t chance it. Also, avoid washing activewear with things like towels where all the fuzzies transfer. I even like to use special detergent for my activewear. My favorite of course is Zyia’s Sweat Lifting Technical Detergent but Amazon carries Rockin’ Green Activewear Laundry Detergent which is great, too. Make sure you wash in cold to prevent color fading. Hot water can cause stains (like sweat) to settle permanently into your clothing. Cold water will also prevent shrinking which happens when you wash in hot water. I like a double rinse too to get all the stink and soap out of my clothes. Just check that setting on your washer. And last, don’t put activewear in the dryer.
HANG DRY
Finally, and most importantly, DON’T put your activewear in the dryer. Did I say that already? The dryer heat will affect the way your clothes fit. You will lose all the elasticity and stretch you love, the stuff that makes your leggings fit even when you’re feeling fluffy, and appreciate from your activewear. The dryer will also ruin your moisture wicking properties. Especially avoid fabric softener, always. Fabric softener wears down the fabric, making those favorite legging not as squat proof as they once were. After your clothes are washed hang them out to dry in a well-ventilated area.
AVOID ADDITIVES
Avoid adding bleach or fabric softeners to your activewear. Bleach may work miracles for whites, but it can also work against you if not used properly. During the process of oxidation, bleach removes dirt and other unwanted markings by breaking up larger stain molecules into smaller ones, which then wash away. The not so good part is that bleach can ruin clothes because it also oxidizes the fabric. Leaving bleach on clothing for too long can cause holes or at least increase your odds of getting them. Your activewear is already soft enough, especially ZYIA! Using fabric softener can ruin the fabric and elasticity of your activewear or other delicates. Avoid bleach altogether when you wash your activewear!
SEPARATE CLOTHING
If you ignore everything else I say, please please listen to this! Wash your activewear separate from the rest of your clothing and one step further, separate your dark activewear from your white activewear. Activewear, because of its moister-wicking capabilities, it litterally will abscorb other colors for the first few washes. So be sure to turn it inside-out before washing.
WASH RIGHT AWAY
It is best to wash your activewear right away, especially if you did a high-intensity workout in them. The longer you let them sit, the easier it is for bacteria to linger and leave behind an unpleasant odor on your clothes, and if they sit in your hamper for long enough, the scent may transfer to your other items.
BE GENTLE
When possible I handwash my activewear but most of us don’t actually have time for that, and that is ok! Simply set your washer to the delicates cycle before beginning. Also, be sure to remove any removable pads, strings, etc. to ensure there aren’t any mishaps. Another good rule of thumb is to place bras in a mesh bag especially for delicates. This removes the possibility of them getting caught on something.
